Who Can Get Help from the Housing Stability Initiative?

A new program called the Housing Stability Initiative is expanding in the United States to help families who are struggling financially, especially with housing costs.

The program gives $500 each month to selected families so they can pay for important needs like rent, bills, or food—without any restrictions on how the money is used.

What is the Housing Stability Initiative?

This initiative is run by United Way of Central Indiana. The purpose is to help low-income families, mainly in the Indianapolis area, by offering a guaranteed basic income.

The program has a $2.5 million budget, funded by local donors and organizations such as Eli Lilly and Company. The goal is to help 125 families through the year 2028.

Unlike other government programs, this payment comes with “no strings attached.” Families can decide for themselves how to use the money for their urgent needs, whether it is for home repairs, paying bills, or buying food.

Who is Eligible?

Right now, you cannot apply for this program directly. Instead, participants are chosen by local organizations, including John Boner Neighborhood Centers and Southeast Community Services, based on certain guidelines:

  • Where you live: The program is currently focused on the IndyEast Economic Mobility District in Indianapolis.
  • Income: It is for homeowners with low incomes who need help to stay financially stable.
  • Family needs: Families that would benefit the most from this help are given priority.

Results from Earlier Programs

Past programs that tested similar monthly payments have been successful. For example, during a pilot program from 2022 to 2024, some of the positive outcomes included:

  • More jobs: The number of participants with full-time jobs grew from 60% to 93%.
  • Higher income: Families’ own monthly income increased by an average of $306.
  • Better education: Some participants used the financial stability to finish high school or earn a university degree.
  • Improved finances: Many families improved their credit scores and paid off large debts.
